Photograph Response (Gottfried Helnwein) Part 2

Image
Seeing the full scale image drastically changes my viewpoint because I thought it was artistic and photoshopped, but it is actually not photoshopped and is actually a documentary image. I no longer believe that it is symbolic, but it is actually just an image of men installing a large-scale image on a building. In the image, the men are harnessed to an industrial looking building while completing installation of a large painted image of a girl. The men are very small compared to the girl. The girl looks stoic, mostly emotionless, and possibly lost within her own thoughts. The title "The Last Girl" could indicate that this is not the only picture of a girl to be displayed on the back of a building, but that this is the last one in a larger project.

Photograph Response (Gottfried Helnwein)

Image
In this photograph by Gottfried Helnwein, a man is climbing on a rope up a girl's face, as if it is a wall or a cliff. I think this picture is artistic rather than documentary because there is likely some symbolic meaning behind it, and it is definitely photoshopped because what is being portrayed is physically impossible. I believe that the man represents someone trying to understand another person, possibly the girl, and climbing her face represents him trying to "discover" her (aka understand her thoughts and feelings and actions). The scale of the man and the girl says that the man feels small compared to her and feels as if there is so much left to learn that will be difficult or even impossible. He views it as a large scale project.

Lost In The World

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AW-3P9XWcXk The general premise of this video centers around a young boy who feels alone in the world because everybody else is so focused on technology and blind to what is going on around them. I feel that the video is effective in conveying its intended message because it dramatizes and emphasizes current and future situations, in such ways as showing people walking off a cliff because they're so preoccupied with their phones, a girl jumping off of a building while everybody records but nobody cares, and a woman being harassed on a subway while nobody cares or notices. These elements depict a world in which nobody cares about one another, and triggers a sense of fear or dread in the audience, as well as sadness (since the song in the background has a very sad tone, and the whole video is in black and white). I think that the video is partially cautionary and partially an examination of our current societal situation because it is much more se...
