1. I'd describe minimalism as simplistic photography with very few elements, colors, or effects that still makes a statement. It mostly relies on strong shapes and contrasting colors to portray its meaning or point. EXAMPLES OF MINIMALISM 1. This photo is a great example of minimalism because it uses contrasting colors of white, yellow, and green, along with shading, shapes, and spacing to create a compelling yet simplistic image. 2. The black ferris wheel in the grey sky seems very dramatic yet simple, especially because it has many different lines and circles and is perfectly centered in the piece. 3. This is a great example of minimalism because it creates a statement using only two colors and slight shading, and placing the coffee cup off center is a nice artistic touch.

Seeing the full scale image drastically changes my viewpoint because I thought it was artistic and photoshopped, but it is actually not photoshopped and is actually a documentary image. I no longer believe that it is symbolic, but it is actually just an image of men installing a large-scale image on a building. In the image, the men are harnessed to an industrial looking building while completing installation of a large painted image of a girl. The men are very small compared to the girl. The girl looks stoic, mostly emotionless, and possibly lost within her own thoughts. The title "The Last Girl" could indicate that this is not the only picture of a girl to be displayed on the back of a building, but that this is the last one in a larger project.

In this photograph by Gottfried Helnwein, a man is climbing on a rope up a girl's face, as if it is a wall or a cliff. I think this picture is artistic rather than documentary because there is likely some symbolic meaning behind it, and it is definitely photoshopped because what is being portrayed is physically impossible. I believe that the man represents someone trying to understand another person, possibly the girl, and climbing her face represents him trying to "discover" her (aka understand her thoughts and feelings and actions). The scale of the man and the girl says that the man feels small compared to her and feels as if there is so much left to learn that will be difficult or even impossible. He views it as a large scale project.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AW-3P9XWcXk The general premise of this video centers around a young boy who feels alone in the world because everybody else is so focused on technology and blind to what is going on around them. I feel that the video is effective in conveying its intended message because it dramatizes and emphasizes current and future situations, in such ways as showing people walking off a cliff because they're so preoccupied with their phones, a girl jumping off of a building while everybody records but nobody cares, and a woman being harassed on a subway while nobody cares or notices. These elements depict a world in which nobody cares about one another, and triggers a sense of fear or dread in the audience, as well as sadness (since the song in the background has a very sad tone, and the whole video is in black and white). I think that the video is partially cautionary and partially an examination of our current societal situation because it is much more se...

1. This photo was taken in a field in the country. It's an image of a woman climbing a ladder to dry her clothes on the wires between telephone poles. In the picture you can see a woman climbing to the wire with a basket of clothes in her hand, either going to take dry clothes off the wire or hang wet clothes on it, like you would normally do on a clothesline. In the background there is a farmhouse and trees. On the left is an open plain. On the right is the focus of the image, the woman on the ladder. The subject looks odd, as if it doesn't belong there. The viewer's attention is focused on the woman and the clothes. The photo is bright and green is the most prominent color. The photo makes us feel amused. It looks like something out of a children's fairytale book. The photographer uses a ladder and straight lines to emphasize the height of the telephone poles, accentuating the unusual nature of the scene. 2. The picture was taken near the shore of a...
